Today the Old Stone House serves as a historic interpretive center with a permanent exhibit about the Battle of Brooklyn as well as other exhibits connected to Brooklyn’s past and present. It also serves as an event space hosting local theater groups, concerts, and more. In addition there are lovely gardens reflecting plants of the era. We support and contribute to the needs of the present-day community through family programs, arts and cultural events and neighborhood advocacy.

The Old Stone House & The Battle of Brooklyn

When the only way to get from point A to a distant point B was to hop aboard a stagecoach, a horse-drawn carriage designed to convey passengers and luggage along one of several well-traveled routes. This program was supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with City Councilmember David Greenfield. Andrew is a founding member and former president of the Long Beach New York Arts Council. He has participated in exhibits in New York, Chicago and Philadelphia. He received a Dean’s Grant from Nippon Steel, graduate grants from SAIC, a critics recommendation to the Vermont Studio School and the Yale Norfolk School of Art, and has served as an adjunct professor and a panel critic. He studied at The Glasgow School of Art and earned his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

The iconic fisheye-lens picture was taken by Barry Feinstein who took numerous iconic album covers (such as Janis Joplin's Pearl and George Harrison's All Things Must Pass). Feinstein was also the exclusive photographer of Bob Dylan's 1966 European tour as well as his 1974 tour with The Band. To find it Collin searched in Google Images for "Topanga canyon old stone" and, after much digging, found it on multiple-listing real estate website. It was one of a series of photos for a larger house on the property that was for sale.

The resulting work teeters between representation and abstraction – teasing recognizable forms out of abstract ones or abstracting recognizable elements through stripping down or layering/obscuring. Specific works were selected for the exhibition that can trace the evolution of most artists’ work processes. Curated by Katherine Gressel, this exhibit brought together emerging artists Tahir Carl Karmali and Justin Sterling to respond to the Old Stone House’s unique space. Both artists use reclaimed and abstracted vernacular materials––including used cell phone batteries and broken windows––to symbolize local and global policies that contribute to inequality and displacement.

Formerly known as Wynn’s Creekside Inn and the Inn at Perkiomenville, this building sits vacant, awaiting an owner who can lovingly convert it to a single-family home or maintain it as an inn or quaint café. To accommodate weary travelers making more than a day’s journey, inns and taverns popped up along the most frequently traveled routes. Many of the “stops” have survived and today thrive as inns, bed and breakfasts and historic sites open to the public for tour. And, every now and again, you come across a stagecoach stop turned private residence. Park Space, Play Space brought together 19 artists and arts groups to address the ideal design, planning and use of public parks.

Located within a city preservation zone, the property’s front lawn is bordered by a landmarked Arroyo Stone retaining wall that also runs in front of several neighboring houses. The updated kitchen features a large central island, soapstone countertops, and plenty of windows.

The Marylanders’ sacrifice became legend—a storied moment in a long war. OSH scholars and educators are happy to lead Battle of Brooklyn walking, bike or bus tours for interested groups or individuals. The Old Stone House is situated at the center of Washington Park/JJ Byrne Playground, a 3.5 acre recreation site. We are devoted to supporting the Friends of Washington Park, and developing programming that enriches the site. Our beautiful playground has separate playspaces for toddlers, elementary and middle-school aged children.

Located between Mt. Washington and Highland Park in Los Angeles, California, this landmarked structure features an original facade made of riverbed stones collected from the Arroyo Seco tributary in central California. Other features (and the floor plan) follow the craftsman style. This three-story stagecoach house, circa 1780, is nestled on a quiet drive away from the main road, which was originally known as the Columbia Turnpike. Surrounded by woods and meadows, the home has been painstakingly restored and features four bedrooms, its original fireplace, wide-planked floors and more.

It is a Historic House Trust of New York City site, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Nicholas Vechte, grandson of Claes, lived in the Old Stone House during the American Revolutionary War under the British occupation. Upon his death in 1779, the farm he willed to his grandson, Nicholas R. Cowenhoven. In 1797, Cowenhoven sold the house to Jacques Cortelyou, who purchased it for the use of his newly married son, Peter.

Along with its education program the Old Stone House also boasts of a newly created playground that incorporates the old garden sitting behind the house. This includes collecting and performing the stories of individuals whose voices might otherwise be absent. Her interventions have included public spaces, cultural and academic institutions, the dominant history of the United States, government policy, environmentalism, feminism, the United Nations, and the mass media.

Today, the building serves as a retail space (just as it was meant to be) and is one of the must-see sights in the state capital. The home has stood empty since 2002 and neglect has led to deterioration. In 2006, the DuPage County Forest Preserve District announced plans to raze the structure; local preservation groups have fought valiantly to save a piece of DuPage County — and American — history. For more information, visit the McKee Preservation Group Facebook page. Ulrich purchased 209 acres of  the original Louther Manor in 1774 from Conrad Manismith.

But America’s path to independence really began in August of 1776 with the Battle of Brooklyn, the first military engagement following the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in July 1776. OSH partners with organizations including Brooklyn Parks and Recreation, Community Markets, Greenbridge, Park Slope Civic Council, and Park Slope Parents. Our garden spaces offer a natural setting of native plants, creating an outdoor interpretive space and a more healthful environment. The Old Stone House building is a reconstruction of the 1699 Vechte-Cortelyou House on land taken from the Lenape as early as 1639. Located in Washington Park, on the border of Park Slope and Gowanus in Brooklyn, it marks the place where the original Dutch farmstead stood and the culminating engagement of the 1776 Battle of Brooklyn took place.

The Missions and Ranchos are a special designation of historic homes that have such a unique position in telling the history of southern California that they deserve a separate page. The Old Stone House was constructed in three phases during the 18th century and is an example of vernacular architecture. Additions were later made, and it was used both as a residence and for business. Icons in their Own Right seeks to remedy historic erasure, champion cultural representation, and reinforce identity and pride. This year, in response to COVID-19, we have once again transitioned our Master's Thesis, Excellence Awards, and Undergraduate Senior Exhibitions online. In 1928, Helen Miller Kendall, accomplished artist and wife of furniture design legend David Wolcott Kendall, established the David Wolcott Kendall Memorial School to continue her husband's legacy of creativity, education, and innovation. Now more than 90 years since its founding, Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD) remains committed to this initial charge. Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD) is a college of art and design located in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. This intensive, immersive experience is designed for developing creatives in high school who are 14.5 years of age or older.

Congratulations on all that you have accomplished during your time at Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University. As we come together to celebrate this milestone in the journey of your life, the work exhibited here is evidence of your outstanding ability. You have put in the time and effort it takes to create exceptional work, overcome challenges and prepared a path for moving forward. Now is the time to savor your accomplishments and ready yourself to embark on your future.

Take with you the persistence, courage, and curiosity you have developed throughout your education and use it to create the bright future I know that you have in front of you. Like many colleges and universities across the nation, KCAD made the difficult decision to transition our Commencement-related activities and events this spring to a virtual format to protect the health and safety of our campus community and guests in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Developed to foster creative opportunities for young people within the creative hub of Los Angeles, any senior-level student from Los Angeles County who plans to enroll at Otis College is eligible for this $40,000 scholarship award. “They all have very strong hardships in their life and they struggle,” says Tobias. It is not just a collection of images, objects, essays, and theses; it is the hard-earned proof that they have persevered through what is perhaps the greatest challenge of our time. KCAD is an extraordinary college, not because of what we say, but because of what you do. This year also marks the 20th anniversary of the merger between KCAD and Ferris State University. As a campus community, we take pride in the elements of KCAD that make our learning community unique and value the opportunities that are a direct result of the college's partnership with Ferris. We emphasize small class sizes and one-on-one interaction, which means our expert faculty are more than teachers—they’re mentors who invest in your success. Beyond the classroom, a KCAD education connects you and your creativity to something bigger than yourself through industry interactions, real-world projects, and community engagement.

While most of Design Week’s events will be held on Dallas College campuses and free to the public, the Future of Fashion Design Showcase will be a ticketed event hosted at On the Levee in the Design District. Emmanuel Tobias, the Dallas College faculty member who oversees the show, has helped in its evolution since he joined the school five years ago. “The biggest thing, and what Dallas College does overall, is provide opportunity for people.

More junior students generally focus on behind the scenes work, while those further along in their studies take center stage. When speaking to the students, it becomes clear that, while their projects come directly from their coursework, the Arts Month events are more than just another assignment. Design Week and the Hilton Anatole exhibit are just the latest examples of how the school helps students turn their passion into a profession, if they so choose. Creative individuals are uniquely positioned to make a difference by offering innovative perspectives and solutions to real-world issues. At ArtCenter College of Design, we believe a comprehensive art and design education is the foundation for success. Traditionally, we celebrate the achievements of our graduating students through on-campus exhibitions each spring.

Established in 1918, Otis College of Art and Design prepares students in the art and design capital of Los Angeles for a dynamic future in the creative economy. The College educates a diverse community of over 1,200 students in a supportive setting to become highly skilled professionals in established and emerging creative sectors. This richness and variety are at the heart of the ArtCenter experience, where the course of study has been reimagined to address the opportunities and demands of the contemporary world. An ArtCenter education inspires and prepares artists and designers to be the creative leaders of the future. The experience gained here will prove invaluable as our graduates pursue their personal and professional goals.

4 Ways To Get Rid of Gnats Without Harming Your Plants

get rid of gnats in house

Cover it with tape or cheesecloth, leaving holes large enough for the bugs to get to it. They'll be attracted by the scent, try to sip the solution, and drown. Hydrogen peroxide will kill the gnat larvae and not injure your plant. Mulching—A layer of mulch on plant pot soil can help to prevent females from laying eggs. Just remember that mulch locks in moisture, so always check soil dampness levels before watering.

Make your own vinegar trap

The insects produce offspring quickly, so it doesn't take long for a population of the gnats to take over. Luckily, getting rid of fungus gnats (and preventing future infestations) is simple when you're armed with the right tips and techniques. You could see drain flies, fruit flies, biting gnats, midges, or mosquitoes, all of which can be mistaken for gnats. When it comes to household gnats, the infestation is typically due to a source of organic material they're drawn to.

Pyrethrin Sprays to Get Rid Off the Small Flying Bugs

While some species of gnats can bite and sting, the species most commonly found inside the house are more of a nuisance than a danger to humans. "In a recent study, we found that most of the 'flying insects' in homes are fungus gnats," says Dr. Changlu Wang, who works in the Department of Entomology at Rutgers University. He adds that fungus gnats "do not bite people or cause allergic reactions."

Plug-in traps

get rid of gnats in house

Pouring one cup of baking soda down your drain, followed by one cup of white vinegar, can help clean a kitchen sink drain and flush out the gnats along with it. What's more, it deodorizes your sink, so gnats are less likely to be drawn to your pipework. Be sure to cover the plug with a damp cloth so the vinegar-soda reaction works its way downwards through your pipes and doesn't flow over into the sink.

Sticky Traps

get rid of gnats in house

Place 1 to 2 inches of sand on top of the soil to discourage standing water and deter gnats from laying eggs. Most gnats don’t bite, sting, or spread disease, but they’re still a nuisance, particularly indoors. These annoying insects are attracted to sweet smells, body heat, sweat, and other forms of moisture. Additionally, they can eat and lay eggs in nearly any kind of decaying organic matter, so they can be hard to get rid of. Some types of moisture-seeking gnats tend to congregate around sink or tub drains. To combat these drain flies, mix ½ cup bleach into a gallon of water and slowly pour the mixture into the drain.

Tips for Preventing Gnats

This will also help get rid of any excess food and bacteria build-up. If you're wondering how to get rid of gnats quickly, look no further. One of the biggest pest control mistakes you can make when dealing with irritants such as gnats is leaving the problem to worsen. It is highly unlikely that gnats will ever go away on their own if they find somewhere to live. You should act to get rid of gnats as soon as you spot one or two lingering around your home to avoid them multiplying rapidly. Check for entry points and trap and kill any offenders in your home before it becomes an infestation.

Tips to prevent gnats from coming back

Here, we look at eight ways to get rid of all types of gnats from your home and prevent them from coming back. We back up our pest control recommendations with a detailed rating methodology that we use to objectively score each provider. So, make sure the AC is working properly in the summer, check for any leaks throughout the house, and add a dehumidifier to any rooms that tend to get damp. Once you’ve successfully eradicated the gnats that have been bothering you, it's time to focus on prevention. Be sure to implement the following habits on a regular basis to keep gnats at bay. Learn how to easily eliminate and prevent these persistent pests.

Although it works better with larger bugs (such as mosquitoes), a bug zapper is always a good option. Nowadays, there are plenty of brands and designs that are safe to use indoors, such as the KATCHY device pictured here. These noiseless machines should be able to catch the majority of gnats and flies in your home, and the best part is, you won't have to lift a finger to make the magic happen. Gnats are tiny (about 1/8 inch long), dark, mosquito-like flies with antennae and long legs. While gnats are not considered dangerous, their presence can be a nuisance in the household.

You will most probably find them flying around your fruit bowl, the trash bin, and open alcohol bottles. They thrive in the summer, but sometimes, you may also see them during the cold months in your house. If your plant soil is infested with gnat larvae and you’re having trouble getting rid of them, repot your plants. Say your plants are dry and gnat-free — that’s the time to start investigating potential sources of mildew or mold. Look for leaky windows, roofs or other cracks that might be letting extra moisture into your home. Repairing these spots could reduce or completely eliminate your gnat problem, as they will lose their food source.

Both seek out standing water (where they lay their eggs), are known for swarming (especially at dusk), and are attracted to light. Mosquitoes are notorious for their blood-sucking proboscis and their bite. Midges are entirely harmless, have no sucking mouthparts, and are easily identified by their fluffy antennae. Whether you're dealing with gnats or one of the many pests mistaken for them, you can prevent an ongoing issue by focusing on sanitation.

Plug-in traps, like the Zevo Flying Insect Trap, can be extremely effective. Bug zappers typically attract flying insects with a UV light, then trap and collect the small bugs. Most modern zappers are safe for indoor use, so you can plug one in adjacent to your gnat problem.

Overripe fruits, veggies, decaying food matter and moisture in drains are all culprits. Another method for drain flies is to pour a cup of bleach down the drain. Like the drain cleaner, pour slowly to ensure the bleach has time to kill all the gnats and larvae. Also, make sure there aren’t any other chemicals in the drain to prevent creating harmful fumes. To get rid of drain flies or drain gnats, simply pour drain cleaner down the drain.

With proper methods of control, they may eventually go away as the year progresses. Gnats have a short life cycle and will often disappear when the cold months start. Gnats don’t usually come from drains but they certainly congregate and breed there. The hyper-moist environment is incredibly attractive to the insects. Regardless of how minor the leak is, if you see one, don’t put off fixing it, says Fredricks. How to get rid of gnats without damaging your plant’s sensitive leaves

Gnats are primarily attracted to sweet and fruity scents, but many species of gnats are also drawn to water and body heat. Perspiration and even the moisture of your eyes and nose can draw in gnats. Fruits, vegetables and flowers growing in your garden or food residue in your sink can attract these pests. Knowing how to get rid of gnats completely will likely require multiple treatments and preventative measures.

Gnats are any of several species of small flies that swarm in great numbers. Kyle Morgan, owner of Care Pest Pros in Spicewood, Texas, says the bugs are mainly a problem outdoors in spring and summer, but they’ll hang out indoors all year round. Not only are these “clouds” of gnats generally annoying, some species also bite humans and pets. Some gnats lay their eggs in soil, where the larvae can damage plant roots.

Once you see a few gnats flying around your home, you could try adding more air flow to discourage them from sticking around. This is a great strategy to try before investing in traps or attempting other DIY methods, since it’s as simple as flipping a switch. Because gnats have small wings, they’re generally weak flyers and typically avoid windy environments or areas with a lot of air movement. Once gnats infest a home, it’s unlikely that they’ll go away on their own. Their food source needs to be removed and larvae need to be killed to effectively get rid of gnats.

Another option that can work for all types of gnats is sticky paper or cards. These cards are yellow—a color that gnats are attracted to— and have adhesive on their faces. As soon as the gnats land on them, they get stuck and dehydrate. There are small cards that can be placed in plant pots, hanging ribbons and other versions available. This might be hard for some greenthumbs, but skip watering those plants. Letting plants dry out a bit between watering will kill larvae, preventing them from thriving off of the fungus on the plant’s roots.

Numerous bug zappers are available for indoor and outdoor use, many of which were tested in our tested guide to the best bug zappers. Choose one that’s maybe a bit smaller and less obtrusive than others, and pick one that is suitable for indoor use, like our top indoor pick from Aspectek. Pour wine that’s past its prime into a small dish; add a couple of drops of dish soap. Bacopa (Chaenostoma cordatum) is a beautiful flowering plant from South Africa. It has trailing vine-like stems that grow flowers in shades of white, pink, and purple. A single bacopa plant will produce many flowers, creating a small mound of flowers for your garden.

Drain flies can sometimes transmit disease, especially when the fly issue is severe. If they fall into food, they may cause an asthmatic reaction, adversely affecting swallowing and breathing. House of Darkness: Exclusive Trailer for the Seductive Gothic Thriller

The effort is likely to face significant legal hurdles, as have previous attempts by the Trump administration and states to force a sale or ban of the app. “I’m glad to see the House help push this important bill forward to force Beijing-based ByteDance to divest its ownership of TikTok,” Warner said in a statement to The Post. The move represents one of the most significant threats to the U.S. operations of the wildly popular app, which is used by roughly 170 million Americans, but whose China-based parent company ByteDance has long sparked national security fears in Washington. The insufferableness of the BMW-driving Hap (played to wormy, beta-bro perfection by Justin Long) suggests his likely fate; the attentions of his beautiful pickup, Mina (a coolly menacing Kate Bosworth), suggest Hap should be wary of her invitation into her literal castle. The writer-director Neil LaBute takes a crack at the post-#MeToo revenge parable but offers more irony than insight. House of Darkness has all those familiar LaBute elements at play within the trappings of a seductive, gothic thriller. LaBute’s plays and films have proven controversial for their depictions of sexual politics, even as they've also been praised for their sharp dialogue and dark humor.

But the real mystery is why a new Neil LaBute movie doesn’t seem to be on anybody’s radar. Buried among the world premieres at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, the project debuted practically in silence and darkness, suggesting that LaBute (who’s been dabbling in television since the MCC split, creating “Billy & Billie” for DirecTV and “The I-Land” for Netflix) may have lost his cultural cachet. But judging by the result, this wicked little movie suggests his voice may be uniquely suited to the broader conversation.

HOUSE OF DARKNESS: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

While Mina is out of the room fixing drinks, Hap calls a male friend to brag about his hookup. Following an evening of drinking, flirting, and kissing, Mina begins unbuckling Hap’s pants. Summary Driving home to her secluded estate after meeting at a local bar, a player (Justin Long) out to score thinks his beautiful, mysterious date (Kate Bosworth) will be another casual hook-up.

Playtime

Lucy responds by telling a tale of wronged women who sought vengeance on men who raped them and who continue pursuing sexual predators across the world. Hap becomes further disturbed when Lucy mentions a cave like the one he saw in his nightmare. Realizing the women intend to teach him a morality lesson, Hap becomes combative and tries to leave. Revealing themselves as vampires, Mina, Lucy and Nora unravel their supernatural powers with their fangs to destroy and devour Hap. Hap has a nightmare where he is imprisoned in a cave with a pile of shoes indicating he is another in a long line of victims. Hap adlibs a glib story about a man who has a threesome with two sisters.

Regardless, the end result is an interesting misfire that only really carries itself across the finish line by relying on our sheer desire to see this guy get demolished and for it all to be over. Oh, and Bosworth being drop-dead hypnotic as the lady, Mina, who's invited a bar-bro home to her freezing cold country castle. LaBute made a name for himself writing about masculinity and gender disparity so watching it play out in a spooky setting is refreshing. The film itself, though, isn't able to sustain under the staging and setting, so a stagnancy sets in. Hap thinks of himself as a “decent guy,” and because Long is such an inherently likable actor, some may give his character the benefit of the doubt.

This clearly isn’t his first one-night stand — nor Mina’s, as a pile of men’s loafers seen over the opening and closing credits unsettlingly suggests. But is infidelity enough to justify whatever Mina and her sister(s) have in store? This is where LaBute is shrewd to leave things vague, inviting audiences to project their own reasons on the film’s inevitable reckoning — a horrific payoff that recalls LabBte’s laughable 2006 remake of “The Wicker Man,” only more intentionally funny this time around. Mina lives in an ominous American castle (Arkansas’ not-at-all-intimidating Dromborg Castle supplied the location, while nighttime exteriors and candlelit parlors give things a fittingly Gothic vibe), and though she claims the two have the place to themselves, Hap keeps catching glimpses of figures at the other end of darkened corridors. But he’s too buzzed and too horny to care, and besides, this clumsy pickup artist isn’t being entirely honest with her either. When Mina asks whether he’s married, Hap offers a cryptic “Not at the moment.” And though he doesn’t overtly pressure her for sex, there’s innuendo in practically everything he says.

While getting acquainted, their flirtation turns playful, sexy and sinister. Sens. Mark R. Warner (D-Va.) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), the leaders of the Senate Intelligence Committee, are supportive of the bill’s inclusion in the aid package, their offices confirmed. The two lawmakers had previously led separate legislative efforts to tackle concerns over the app. Since lawmakers introduced their latest proposal targeting the app last month, the company has launched a major counteroffensive against the effort, enlisting scores of users through pop-up notifications to bombard lawmakers with calls voicing opposition to the legislation.

Part cautionary tale, part post-#MeToo ghost story, this sly chamber piece uses silence and darkness to its advantage, allowing audiences’ imaginations to fill in the spaces and shadows of an atypical one-night stand. “Policymakers have legitimate concerns about Chinese-made apps and reciprocal access to China’s digital market, but they should address those issues through policies that are specific, scalable, and sound,” Castro said in an email to The Post. By its generic title alone, House of Darkness seems destined to blend into the million-zillion streaming menus we scroll through mindlessly, but does it deserve such a fate? After House lawmakers passed the earlier TikTok legislation in just over a week, many senators called for slowing down deliberations in the upper chamber. Senate Commerce Committee Chairwoman Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), whose committee has jurisdiction over the bill, initially expressed concerns about whether the proposal could withstand legal scrutiny and called for hearings. House of Darkness is unique in staging and intent but that never propels it beyond being a curiosity. The performances are solid and the experiment is more than clear but it overstays its welcome about mid-way and never offers more than new rooms of the house to explore and one more person to talk to beyond the starting duo.

An argument could be made that going into this film knowing absolutely nothing ahead of time will yield the best results, but even then it's hard not to imagine growing impatient. House of Darkness isn't exactly a two-person gig, though, as one of the ways the story pushes itself along is with the introduction of Gia Crovatin (Billions, Syfy's Van Helsing) as another dweller in the manor who only serves to help Long's tipsy tomcat dig himself into a deeper hole, desire-wise. This definitely aids the back half of the film but, simultaneously, presents more of the same, adding to the dastardly repetition at work. Dracula fans may latch onto small tells and talismans here and there but the final result is still a movie that makes its point early and then doesn't offer much afterward. Would House of Darkness have been made and presented differently outside of the pandemic era or was the idea always to blend a two-person date play into something vampiric (with female empowerment overpinnings)?

The Senate plans to take the matter up Tuesday, Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) said in a statement emailed to The Post. “The Senate now stands ready to take the next step,” Schumer said. John Serba is a freelance writer and film critic based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. House of Darkness is rated R and will be released theatrically by Saban Films on September 9, 2022, and on digital and On Demand on September 13.

A frequent chronicler of power games between the sexes, LaBute excels at this kind of loaded repartee, in which characters communicate their intentions via subtext. The delivery may be too stilted to take at face value, but that’s all the better for keeping audiences guessing. As the evening escalates, Hap becomes more direct in his douchebaggery, even going so far as to hit on Mina’s sister Lucy (Gia Crovatin) after she appears, equally lovely and every bit as enigmatic. House of Darkness finds writer-director Neil LaBute just as acerbic as ever, although he's made more compelling statements on sexual mores.

But since then, a number of senators have come out in favor of the proposal and plans to tuck it into the foreign aid package. Cantwell announced Wednesday that she now supports the legislation after lawmakers agreed to give ByteDance more time to sell off TikTok. It’s pretty clear what Hap Jackson (Justin Long) is hoping will follow when he offers Mina Murray (Kate Bosworth, eerily difficult to read) a ride home from the local bar. Guys like Hap refer to nights like this as “getting lucky,” though he’s almost certain to have a different view of things once this tryst is through. The lucky one here in fact is Mina, whose motives aren’t nearly as apparent — the uncertainty of which drives the sense of creeping dread that percolates over the next hour and a half, depicted practically in real time. After meeting at a bar, Hapgood "Hap" Jackson goes back to Mina Murray’s remote, castle-like estate.
